When a group of marketing professionals leave the city to start up a company in a rural area, people think: ‘Where will you find your clients? How can you function without an easy drop-in location?’. Years later, our client base is vast and ever growing, and the service we provide is beyond what we had envisaged on day one.
We left the city in the teeth of a recession to base ourselves in the beautiful Conamara Gaeltacht with a view to creating jobs locally and availing of an intelligent workforce that had been positively exposed to the communications opportunities located nearby ( TG4 and RnaG – the national Irish language TV & Radio stations are based just a few miles down the road).
We started with the intention of helping our clients through exclusively digital means. What happened next took us all by surprise…
In the Autumn of 2012, following a communication’s clinic talk that Breandán gave at a gathering organised by Galway Chamber, we were approached by a business owner who had a very specific job in mind:
“I would like your company to contact potential clients by phone and set up one-to-one meetings for us. We’ve tried all other forms of marketing and nothing sticks.”
Our initial thought was ‘yuck… telemarketing!’. We remembered this work from our junior days in sales and marketing training, but surely the world had moved on! Still, we were a young company, and this client was sure that this was what he wanted. So we gave it a go, but we decided to lay down a few markers: 1) only A-rated qualifications and no cheap meetings, 2) get an internal referral to move from ‘cold call’ to ‘warm call’ asap, 3) mix the telephone work with digital marketing devices.
We called it ‘Telemarketing 2.0!’.
After just one month the results were so staggering that we had to completely re-think our business offering! Our client was astonished – it was the only service that had ever provided him with clear, measurable and tangible results – in other words, SALES! Years afterwards they are still clients of ours!
From that time onward, we have grown obsessed with proper communicative marketing. 1-2-1 connections are about creating real, substantial and long-lasting business relationship. Our pool of connection-companies has grown throughout Ireland and the UK – meaning that we are in a position to build real business connections globally, from our local base here in rural Conamara!
